Financial Peace University update

So we did a fun (fun to me anyway) exercise a couple weeks ago at our Financial Peace University class.

We were asked to write down on an index card how much debt we have. We are going to compare the totals to what we have at the end of the 13-week class sessions.

I smiled widely (maybe a little too widely) and wrote a big ...
0 ...
zero ...
goose egg ...
on our index card. You have no idea how wonderful that felt!

Three years ago, that exercise would not have been nearly as pleasant. Even one year ago because we still owed money on my van.

Unfortunately we were probably in the minority there. I know for a fact that the girl sitting next to me had no clue how much debt she had, but she knew she had a lot. I felt her pain. Because I've been there.

It is so empowering to know where we are financially. To finally be rid of the "monkey on our backs".

If you're not there, get there! Whatever it takes! Get there! You will be so glad you did!

Debt free rocks!!!

Edited to add: Thanks for all the great comments! I just wanted to point out that we do still have a mortgage. But according to Dave Ramsey's plan, we can consider ourselves debt free when we only have a mortgage left ... no credit cards, student loans, car payments, etc. Paying off the mortgage is step #6 in his 7-step plan. We're working on step #3 which is saving 3-6 months of expenses (the full emergency fund). Hope that clears things up a bit!

I know what you mean, sweetie....I'm *this close*....but I'm also renting, so I don't have the home to show for it.

Still, it's great not having so many bills coming in the mail.

wow, that's great! We are in the midst of attending DAve Ramsey's Financial Peace University and unfortunately had to write down a pretty big number. :( But it feels good to be on the right path and to be paying off that debt, finally!
Congrats! I can't wait to be where you are!

I have zero debt! Who hoo! Of course in a year or two when I buy a house I will have ridiculous debt. :( But we will be reasonable and do it right. Being completely debt free for over a year now has spoiled us and it will help us to buy a cheap house and wait for the grand one.

We are reading Total Money Makeover. Thanks for letting me borrow it. It's a lot of the same stuff but I needed to read it again to keep it fresh in my mind. We are doing really great with sticking to our budget (I should say I'M doing great because I was the one who needed to get back on track haha. I'm the spender.) It's fun to actually be on track again.
