Computer problems

On Tuesday of this week I shut down my laptop just like I do every day and went to bed.  When I got up the next morning and tried to fire it up, it didn't.  The little blue light that indicates power came on and the fan ran for a few seconds, then nothing.

I had a quick panic attack since I had just taken Anna's photos the day before, uploaded them from my camera to my computer, and reformatted the sd card like always.  What I hadn't done was run a quick backup.  I had just backed up my pictures through the end of September.  And I typically back them up twice a month - around the 15th and then again at the end of the month.  So you can imagine my dismay when my laptop, which isn't that old by the way, decided to flake on me.

I went about my day trying not to be too sad.  I used the family laptop for some things that needed to get done.  After church that night I tried turning it on one more time just for kicks and it worked!  I immediately did a quick back up of October's pictures and some other files that I know I worked on since my last back up.  When I went to bed, I was afraid to turn it off, so I didn't.  But it went into sleep mode and Thursday morning would not wake up.  :(

A couple of my facebook friends gave me the name of a local repair guy that they had used and trusted, so I gave him a call.  Left a message with a call back number.  Then went about my day.  I had put my laptop in the car just in case he called while I was out.  I took it into my friend Laura's house (where I was going to watch/help/learn while she photographed a baby) since it was pretty cold out and I didn't feel comfortable leaving it in the car.  I wanted to show her what it was (or wasn't) doing, so I pushed the on button and it turned on!  Weird.  So I turned it back off, waited a while and tried again.  Nothing.  Ugh.

The repair guy called me back shortly after I left Laura's.  After explaining the situation, and although he wasn't certain he could fix it, he agreed to look at it, so I swung by and dropped it off.  And that is where it is now.

I told my husband last night that if it isn't fixable or will cost too much to fix, I am declaring an "emergency" and we will dip into our emergency fund to replace my laptop.  I have church stuff to do.  I have PTO Treasurer stuff to do.  I have photos to edit and deliver.  I have photo shoots coming up that will need edited and delivered.  I have photo books to make.  There are just way too many things that I rely on my laptop for and this "family" laptop just can't handle them.  Plus the rest of the family won't be happy with my hogging the computer all the time.  :)

So that is where I am right now.  Not sure if I will be able to participate in Sunday's Scavenger Hunt.  Or post my weekly pictures on Monday.  Not huge things in the grand scheme of life, but definitely affecting my life right now.

Hoping to be back in the swing of things soon!

And since I can't post without including a picture ... here is a photo of Alex.
He agreed to help me scope out a new location for photo shoots.  Actually I bribed him with the promise of a Dairy Queen pumpkin pie blizzard if he cooperated.  He did remarkably well!  I edited the photo on pixlr.com - not as great as PSE10, but it works in a pinch.

Well I think the program you used did a fine job although I know that I would feel a bit off by posting something that was not processed in a usual way.

I am SO SORRY to hear about your computer. I have been having something similar happening to mine along with some serious slow internet issues. Beyond frustrating because like you, my computer is just over a year old. It's amazing how much we rely on them & when things don't work like they should it slows down just about everything in our lives. Hoping it can be fixed easily!!

A broken computer is such a pain! Definitely an emergency! Especially when you are doing photo shoots. Hope it's all taken care of soon. And I love the shots in your last post!
